Hay or roughage should form the basis of a goats diet, with additional concentrates to help maintain condition and for growth or milk production. Adult goats will usually eat at least 1-2kg of hay a day (more if grass or other feedstuffs are not available), but milkers will often need nearer 3.5kg of hay a day. For a goat that isnt producing milk, 0.5-1.0kg of concentrate a day should be enough to maintain condition, and this should be split between 2 or 3 feeds.
As with all animals, the quantity of sheep feed needed to maintain condition without becoming overweight will vary according to many factors. Highland breeds will naturally tend to do better on less concentrate feed than lowland breeds. The time of year than ewes are due to lamb will also have an effect. Take a hands-on approach to assessing condition, and adjust amounts fed accordingly.
